MTB Saalbach - the best tours for Saalbach MTB holidays

BIG-5 BIKE Challenge

  • Distance: 61.1 km
  • 4,195 altitude metres
  • Hard

The BIG-5 Bike Challenge combines five impressive mountains and six cable cars around Saalbach Hinterglemm and Leogang to create an unforgettable XXL bike adventure.

This challenge around our biking hotel in Saalbach not only offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, but also the opportunity to put your fitness to the test. If you want to save energy in between, you can relax by taking the cable cars to the top. Ambitious bikers, however, have the opportunity to master additional altitude metres using their own muscle power.

But be careful: even with cable car support, the entire tour takes almost a whole day! In the end, it’s not just about conquering all five peaks, but also the additional altitude metres that you have gained under your own steam.

Bärenbach tour

  • Distance: 22 km
  • 750 altitude metres
  • Medium

Starting in the heart of Hinterglemm, you follow the signposted cycle path north-east towards Saalbach. The route branches off southwards just before a fishpond, leading along a picturesque forest path with several hairpin bends up to the intermediate station of the Schattberg X-Press. Here, the cable car makes the rest of the ascent to the Schattberg Ostgipfel (eastern summit). Having arrived on the summit, the route first leads downhill to a mountain saddle. From the Mittelgipfel (middle summit) you can either take a short section northwards or a steep cart track southwards to the Schattberg Westgipfel (west summit), where the magnificent panoramic view and a well-earned rest in the Westgipfelhütte cabin await you. The descent begins with a wonderful single trail south-westwards to the Hacklberger Alm. The route then heads northwards on a gravel road to the Bergstadl before descending westwards to Hinterglemm.

Hennerleiter round tour

  • Distance: 30.3 km
  • 1,170 altitude metres
  • Medium

This scenic and challenging MTB tour starts in Saalbach on the forest path along the Spielbergbach stream, then uphill to the Spielberghaus, where you enter Tyrolean territory shortly afterwards.

An approximately 5 km long, relaxed descent leads down into the valley, ideal for a short break. At the end of this stretch, you can take a cosy break at the Gasthaus Eiserne Hand. Along the way, there are also exciting insights into the facilities of the Hochfilzen magnesite plant.

After the break, it’s all uphill again. The route leads along the Schwarzache stream into the Hörndlinger Graben, where the most challenging section begins just before the Pulvermacher Scherm. Here, the famous Hennerleiter winds its way up the mountain with numerous narrow hairpin bends – a real challenge! You’ll reach the highest point, the Wetterkreuz, after almost 600 altitude metres.

There are various options for the descent to Hinterglemm. You can choose between single trails (Wetterkreuz-Trail, Blue-Line or Pro-Line) or forest tracks. The journey back to our MTB hotel in Saalbach Hinterglemm takes you back to Saalbach via the Glemmtal cycle path.

Huber Hochalm round tour

  • Distance: 17.8 km
  • 770 altitude metres
  • Hard

From Hinterglemm, the route first heads into the valley, past Zwölferkogelbahn valley station, before turning into the Schwarzachergraben. After around 3 kilometres, you leave the valley floor and head uphill through the forest before the landscape opens up and the route leads across the idyllic alpine pastures of the Stiegeralm.

You’ll reach the Hacklbergeralm after almost 8 kilometres. From here, the tour continues through the Stiegergraben, initially flat or even slightly downhill, before another short climb awaits you on the challenging carriage track. After reaching the Huber Hochalm, you come back to a wider forest path that leads quickly down into the valley. Here you can take a detour to the Huberalm for a cosy stop before heading back to Hinterglemm.

Panorama Alm round tour

  • Distance: 14.9 km
  • 670 altitude metres
  • Medium

This training tour starts at the Schattberg X-Press in Saalbach. From here, you cross the Saalach and cycle out of the valley on the Glemmtal cycle path to the Bergerkreuz district. There, turn left over the bridge, cross the main road and follow the Bergerkreuzweg, which leads steadily uphill – initially asphalted, later as a gravel path. The route meanders at a steady incline through numerous bends, past the Bergeralm and the Thurneralm, until you reach the highest point at the Panorama Alm after around 680 altitude metres. A short gravel descent in a north-westerly direction takes you past the Wirtsalm to the Spielberghaus.

There are two options for the return journey to Saalbach by MTB: the short but beautiful Höllen Trail or the forest road along the Spielbergbach stream back to the starting point.

Schattberg round tour

  • Distance: 27.1 km
  • 1,171 altitude metres
  • Hard

This MTB tour in Saalbach starts at the valley station of the Schattberg X-Press. Follow the cycle path out of the valley to Jausern before heading uphill on a winding and steeply ascending forest road. The route leads towards Schattberg Ost and Schattberg West past the Rammernalm and the Limbergalm. The descent is a real highlight – the route leads over seemingly endless, flowing trails, first via the Hacklberg Trail and later via the Buchegg Trail. The Glemmtal cycle path then leads back to the starting point at the valley station.

Talschluss (valley end) round tour

  • Distance: 18.4 km
  • 480 altitude metres
  • Easy

The tour starts comfortably in Hinterglemm, biking upstream along the Glemmtal cycle path. After around 7 km you reach the valley end car park, where you turn left over the bridge. From here, the route climbs gently into the valley, past the Stefflalm to the Lindlingalm. Continue uphill to the right, keeping left at the first crossroads to finally reach the highest point of the tour – the Ossmannalm. From here, a narrow hiking trail leads downhill, where you need to be particularly careful of oncoming hikers.

Zwölferkogel / Ellmaualm

  • Distance: 19 km
  • 958 altitude metres
  • Medium

Starting from the centre of Hinterglemm, the route first heads towards the valley end. Turn left at the Gumpold sports shop and follow the Schwarzacherweg, which is initially asphalted but later turns into a gravelled forest path. From here, things get challenging, as the path climbs steadily and leads up to the Ellmaualm. Now the steepest section of the tour begins – the path climbs up to the Seekar on rough, gravelly serpentines. This is followed by a short descent on rough ground, at the end of which you turn left uphill towards the Zwölferkogel. From there you have a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding mountain ranges. The descent leads down via the Hintermaisalm back to the starting point in Hinterglemm.
